Handmade Notebooks: Timeless Companions from a Linz Atelier

A notebook is more than just paper and a cover; it is an archive for thoughts, a collection of memories, and a tactile experience that gains significance in a digital world. In our Linz workshop, we combine traditional bookbinding artistry with modern demands for aesthetics and longevity.

Choosing a handmade notebook is a commitment to slowing down. While industrial mass-produced goods often fray at the edges after a few months or suffer from failing bindings, we rely on techniques that endure across generations. Each of our notebooks is crafted individually, using only materials that possess their own character and develop a beautiful patina over time.

Whether it is a private diary, a professional sketchbook for artists, or a precious family album—the choice of paper and cover material determines the soul of the book. We provide comprehensive guidance in selecting textures and colors to create an object that exactly matches your vision while meeting the functional requirements of a daily tool.

The Creation Process in Four Steps

01

Concept & Material Selection

First, we define the format, paper weight, and type of binding together. We choose between goat leather, high-quality linen, or special Japanese paper, depending on the intended use.

02

Smyth Sewing & Cutting

The paper is folded into signatures and firmly connected using traditional Smyth sewing (Fadenheftung). This ensures the book opens flat and the pages never come loose.

03

Cover Production

The book cover is made from stable greyboard and precisely covered with the chosen material. Corners are carefully folded and fixed to ensure maximum structural stability.

04

Final Finishing

In the final step, the text block and cover are joined. Optional details such as a ribbon marker or custom embossing are added before the book undergoes final quality control.

Who We Craft These Books For

Our handmade notebooks are designed for people who value individuality and tactile quality. This includes:

  • Private Individuals: Those seeking a durable diary or an exclusive gift that tells a personal story.
  • Artists and Designers: Those requiring a sketchbook whose paper meets specific requirements for weight and absorbency (e.g., for watercolor or ink).
  • Families: Those wishing to create a high-quality album for documentation. For this, we recommend our guide on gathering materials for family albums.
  • Companies: Those wanting to present a representative, handmade writing book to their business partners as a sign of appreciation.

How the Collaboration Works

The process begins with a detailed inquiry via our contact page or a personal appointment at our workshop in Linz. We discuss your requirements: Should the book reflect a specific theme? Are there requirements for the paper type (lined, squared, blank)? Following this consultation, we provide a binding cost estimate.

Once the material selection is finalized, a deposit is made, and we begin production. Since we craft every book by hand, we keep you updated on the progress. Completion takes place in our workshop, where every detail is checked before we notify you for pickup or arrange secure shipping.

Customer Preparations

To help us realize your notebook perfectly, we ask you to consider the following points in advance:

  • Format: Do you prefer the classic A5 format or a custom size?
  • Paper Requirements: How many pages are needed? Should it be acid-free archival paper?
  • Material Preference: Do you prefer the robustness of linen or the elegance of goat leather?
  • Special Features: Do you need an elastic closure, an inner pocket at the end of the book, or a specific ribbon marker?

The Result: What You Receive

At the end of the process, you receive a unique piece that meets the highest craft standards. Each notebook is carefully packaged to protect it from external influences. Along with the physical book, we provide a brief guide on the optimal care of the cover material (especially for leather), ensuring your companion remains beautiful for decades.

We document the primary materials used so that in the event of a future expansion or repair, you know exactly which paper types were used. You receive a product that is not only functional but possesses its own aesthetic through its materiality and craftsmanship.

Timeframes and Delivery

Handcraft requires time and precision. The average duration for the production of an individual notebook is 3 to 6 weeks. This period includes the procurement of special papers, the drying time of the glues, and the careful sewing. For multiple copies (e.g., for corporate orders), the schedule is adjusted accordingly and communicated in advance.

If you have a project with a very tight deadline, please check our conditions for express production in the Terms. We always strive for punctual delivery, but we prioritize craft quality over speed.

Scope of Service: What is Included

To ensure full transparency, we list the services standardly included in the production of a notebook:

What is Not Included in Standard

Certain refinements are not covered by standard prices and are calculated separately:

  • Individual gold or blind embossing on the cover or the spine.
  • Procurement of external, very rare special papers not available in our stock.
  • Design and printing of tables of contents or endpapers.
  • Complex closure systems such as leather straps with metal buckles.

Price Overview for Handmade Notebooks

Model Price incl. VAT Price excl. VAT Unit
A5 Linen (Standard) 45.00 € 37.50 € Piece
A5 Leather (Premium) 95.00 € 79.17 € Piece

Pricing and Value Added Tax

Our price calculation is based on two factors: the material value and the required labor time. High-quality goat leather has a significantly higher procurement cost than linen, which is reflected in the price difference between the models. Additionally, processing leather requires more complex techniques when covering corners and edges.

For private customers, the price including Austrian VAT applies. For business customers (B2B), we state the net amount. Please note that for individual custom orders, a deposit is required according to our Terms before we begin cutting the materials.

Frequently Asked Questions about Notebooks

Can I bring my own paper?

Yes, this is generally possible. However, we ask that the paper has a weight and quality suitable for binding. We check your material in advance to ensure it is compatible with our gluing and sewing techniques.

Which paper types do you recommend for sketchbooks?

For pencil and graphite drawings, we recommend a smooth paper from 100g/m². For wet media like watercolor, we use special, high-white watercolor paper with an appropriate grain, which requires a stronger binding.

Are the notebooks archival-safe?

Yes, we exclusively use acid-free papers and pH-neutral adhesives. This prevents the paper from yellowing or becoming brittle over time, which is essential for family albums and documentation.

Do you offer small quantities for companies?

Absolutely. We produce both single pieces and small series. Depending on the quantity, we can optimize material costs. Contact us for an individual offer.
