Frequently Asked Questions about our Bookbindery

Welcome to our FAQ section. In a craft workshop like ours, precise coordination between the client and the artisan is the foundation for a durable, high-quality result. Since every spine, every type of paper, and every binding method presents unique technical requirements, we have compiled the most important questions regarding our processes in Linz here.

We prioritize transparency, particularly concerning costs and timelines. Please note that all conditions mentioned here are in accordance with our Terms and Conditions and our Privacy Policy. If you have a specific question regarding an ongoing project, please use our Contact page.

Orders & Materials

How does the ordering process for a custom binding work?
The process begins with a detailed inquiry via our contact form or email. We discuss the desired binding technique (e.g., Fadenheftung or Halbfranzösisch) and the choice of materials. After this consultation, we create a binding and material list along with a cost estimate. Once you confirm this estimate, we begin the planning phase.
Which materials do you use in the workshop?
We rely on high-quality, traditional materials that guarantee maximum longevity. Our standard repertoire includes genuine goat leather (Ziegenleder), durable linen (Leinen), and specialized Japanese paper (Japanpapier) for fine conservation work. Depending on the project, we offer various colors and textures, which are selected together with the client before work begins.
Is a deposit required for my order?
Yes, to secure the procurement of materials and the reservation of workshop capacity, we require a deposit of 30% of the estimated total value. The remaining balance is due upon completion and acceptance of the work.
Can I provide my own materials (e.g., special paper)?
In principle, this is possible, provided the materials are workable by hand and meet the quality standards for a permanent binding. We inspect provided materials in advance to ensure they do not react negatively with the adhesives or dyes used in our process.

Timelines & Appointments

How long does it take to complete an order?
Because we perform genuine handwork and strictly observe necessary drying times, the average lead time for a project is between 3 and 6 weeks. This timeframe varies depending on the complexity of the binding and the current workload of our master bookbinders.
Do you offer an express service for urgent work?
In exceptional cases, we can prioritize certain tasks. For the accelerated processing of an order, an urgency fee of 50% is added to the regular price. Please inquire individually about the availability of this option.
When will I be informed about the progress of my book?
We inform you about key milestones, particularly after the completion of the sewing/stitching and before the final cover is applied. We generally respond to status inquiries via email within 24 hours.
What happens if I cannot pick up my finished order immediately?
We store your finished work in our workshop free of charge for a maximum period of 30 days after notification. Please coordinate the pickup with us in a timely manner.

Old & Valuable Books

Do you repair very old or damaged family chronicles?
Yes, the repair of old books is a core area of our expertise. We use conservation methods to secure the physical state of the book and restore its usability. Our primary focus is always the preservation of the original substance.
Do you undertake the restoration of state-protected cultural assets?
No. We perform high-quality artisanal repairs and bindings, but we do not undertake official restorations of objects under state cultural heritage protection, as these require specific state accreditation.
How do you handle the risk when working with originals?
We treat every original with the utmost care. However, we must point out that with very fragile papers, minimal changes may occur due to the mechanical process of binding. Details regarding liability can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
Can you reassemble loose pages of an old book?
Yes, provided the pages are complete and have not decayed too severely, we can bring them back into a stable structure using thread sewing and create a new binding.

Print Runs & B2B

Do you offer bindings for small editions (e.g., for artists)?
Yes, we specialize in small print runs in hardcover. This is ideal for limited editions, artbooks, or high-end corporate publications that require a haptic quality that industrial bindings cannot provide.
How is billing handled for business customers (B2B)?
For our B2B partners, we offer a payment term of 14 days after invoicing. Invoices are detailed with the corresponding tax rates.
Can you bind thesis papers in a short amount of time?
Yes, the binding of theses is a standard service. We offer efficient hardcover solutions for this purpose. Please refer to our specific pricing in the services overview.
Are the prices inclusive of VAT?
On our website, we list prices both including and excluding the statutory VAT (20%), allowing both private clients and companies to calculate costs clearly.

Payment & Shipping

Which payment methods do you accept?
We accept bank transfers as well as cash payments upon pickup at our workshop in Linz. Deposits are generally handled via bank transfer.
Is an exchange of handmade works possible?
Since these are custom creations based on your specific requirements, they are excluded from exchange according to our terms, unless there is a material or processing defect.
What happens if I withdraw from an order after the material has been cut?
Once the materials (e.g., leather or linen) have been cut, they can no longer be used for other projects. In this case, the deposit will not be refunded as the material costs have already been incurred.
Do you ship finished books by mail?
We recommend personal pickup at our workshop in Linz to inspect the work together. However, insured shipping is possible for an additional fee. Packaging is carried out according to strict conservation guidelines.
