Craftsmanship and Precision in the Heart of Linz

Our History

Bearcatdock GmbH was founded in 2012 in Linz with a clear purpose: to preserve the classic art of bookbinding within a modern, digital world. For over a decade, we have dedicated ourselves to the refinement of paper and leather, as well as the preservation of valuable printed works. Our approach merges traditional techniques with the specific requirements of today's clients, ranging from private collectors to professional publishers.

We believe in the tactile nature and longevity of a physical book. In an era of rapid consumption, we prioritize permanence. Every project that leaves our workshop is the result of careful planning and precise execution, where the physical properties of the materials remain the central focus of our work.

The Team

Behind Bearcatdock is a coordinated team of three specialists, each bringing distinct expertise to the workshop to create comprehensive solutions for our clients:

  • Julia Schmid: Owner and Managing Director. She oversees the strategic direction and manages all client communications.
  • Matthias Wagner: Master Bookbinder. He is responsible for the technical implementation and complex binding structures.
  • Sarah Weber: Paper Conservator. Her focus is on the conservation and professional repair of antique and fragile stocks.

Together, we work closely with our clients to determine the optimal binding for every specific volume. We rely on transparent communication, from the initial consultation to the final handover of the finished work.

Workshop and Equipment

Our workshop, located in the center of Linz, covers 45 m² and is specialized in high-quality manual production. We are equipped with the necessary presses and tools to implement various binding techniques, including Fadenheftung (sewn binding), Klebebindung (adhesive binding), and the sophisticated Halbfranzösisch (half-French binding).

Our selection of materials is strictly limited to quality and durability. We prefer working with goat leather, high-grade linen, and Japanese paper to ensure an ideal balance between aesthetics and structural stability. The photographs of our workshop are illustrative and show the environment where each book is individually crafted.

Our workflow consists of a detailed material analysis, the creation of a cost estimate, manual production, and a final quality control. We ensure that the chosen materials harmonize with the content and the intended use of the book.
