Custom Book Boxes and Protective Cases for Long-Term Preservation
A precious book is more than just a collection of pages; it is an object capable of enduring for generations, provided it is shielded from light, dust, and mechanical wear. In our Linz workshop, we craft individual protective cases that combine the highest conservation standards with aesthetic elegance.
The Art of Bibliographic Conservation
In the world of bibliophilia, the enclosure is as vital as the content. A poorly constructed box can, paradoxically, cause more harm than no protection at all through the use of incorrect materials or an overly tight fit. We rely on proven bookbinding techniques to create cases that are not only visually appealing but actively preserve the physical integrity of your volumes.
Our cases are developed according to a precise mathematical model that allows for minimal clearance to avoid tension on the book spine, while ensuring a secure fit that prevents the volume from shifting inside. We exclusively use materials recognized in the field of archiving to eliminate chemical reactions with the paper or leather of the book.
Our Case Manufacturing Process
Precision Measurement
We determine the exact dimensions of your book—height, width, and depth—taking into account the natural curvature of the text block and the covers.
Material Selection
Together, we choose the appropriate covering from our range of goat leather, linen, or specialized Japanese paper, matched to the value and style of the work.
Construction & Covering
The core, made of acid-free greyboard, is precisely cut and professionally covered and folded with the chosen material.
Finishing & Fit Test
After the drying phase, the case is finalized and a final fit test is performed before the work is securely packaged.
Who We Create These Protective Cases For
Our custom boxes are designed for individuals and institutions seeking the long-term preservation of their collections. This includes private collectors of antiquarian books who wish to save their rare finds from decay, as well as artists who want to deliver their limited edition artbooks in a dignified and protective presentation.
Small libraries or family archives in Upper Austria also trust our expertise when it comes to securely storing fragile documentations or ancestral records. We understand that every object has an individual history and therefore requires an individual protection solution that goes far beyond the standard sizes available in commercial trade.
Technical Implementation and Methodology
The production of a book box begins with a detailed analysis of the object. We check whether the book already exhibits deformations that must be considered during the construction of the box. The choice of cardboard is crucial here: we use exclusively acid-free materials, as standard boards can release acids over time, causing the book's paper to yellow or become brittle.
The covering process is performed traditionally using adhesives that are reversible and do not warp the material. Depending on the requirements, the box can be executed as a simple clamshell or as a more elaborate case with a closure mechanism. Every edge is folded with artisanal precision to ensure a perfect geometry that supports the book without squeezing it.
What You Should Prepare for the Order
To ensure a smooth process, we ask our clients to either bring the original work to our workshop in Linz for measurement or provide a detailed description including precise millimeter measurements. The latter, however, carries a certain risk, as we cannot verify the physical condition of the binding.
Additionally, you should be clear about the desired aesthetics: should the box be discreet in a neutral grey tone to fit into an archive, or should it emphasize the luxurious character of the book through high-quality goat leather and color coordination? A short note on the intended use (pure storage vs. regular presentation) helps us choose the correct material thickness.
The Result of Your Order
You will receive a handmade, perfectly fitting case that protects your book from the three greatest enemies of bibliophilia: light, dust, and mechanical abrasion. In addition to the physical product, we provide a short guide on optimal storage for the box, including tips on humidity and temperature to maximize the lifespan of your work.
Furthermore, we document the materials used, so that you know exactly which components were employed for the protection of your book for any future conservation measures. The box is designed to enclose the book securely while allowing easy access without straining the binding when removing the volume.
Timeline and Delivery Terms
Since every case is a custom creation, the average duration from ordering to completion is approximately 3 to 6 weeks. This period includes the drying phases of the adhesives used and the precise manual finishing. In urgent cases, we can offer prioritization upon agreement, although artisanal quality always takes precedence over speed.
Scope of Service and Limitations
Our service includes planning, material procurement, and the artisanal manufacture of the box. We ensure that the box meets conservation standards. Please note, however, that we do not perform chemical cleaning or deep restoration of the book's interior as part of this order. If the measurement reveals that the book itself is unstable, we recommend a separate repair via our repair department.
Important Notice: We do not perform restorations on state-protected cultural assets, as special accreditations are required for such work. Our services are focused on the private and commercial sectors.
Pricing and Taxes
Our prices are calculated based on material costs and the required labor hours. Since it is a custom creation, the final price is fixed after an initial inspection of the object. All stated prices include the statutory VAT of 20% in Austria. For commercial customers (B2B), we list the net amount separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which materials do you use for the interior?
We exclusively use acid-free cardboard and papers that meet international archival standards. This prevents chemical residues from the packaging from migrating to the book and causing damage.
Can I choose the color of the covering material?
Yes, we offer a selection of high-quality linen fabrics and leathers. We are happy to advise you in our Linz workshop to find a color that harmonizes with the binding of your book.
Is a box really necessary if the book is on a shelf?
A shelf does not protect against dust, UV radiation, or humidity fluctuations. A case, however, creates a closed microclimate and prevents the book from being damaged by its own weight or by being pulled incorrectly from the shelf.
What happens if the book "works" (expands) over time?
We intentionally plan a minimal clearance into the construction. This tolerance is calculated to withstand natural fluctuations of the material under different humidity levels without pressing the book.
