Repair of Old Books: Preserving Your Written Heritage

We safeguard the history of your volumes. With artisanal precision and archival-grade materials, we rescue damaged covers and brittle pages for future generations.

The Art of Conservation

An old book is far more than just the sum of its pages; it is a physical witness to bygone eras, often entwined with deep personal emotions or historical significance. However, over the decades, natural decay, improper storage, or simple wear and tear leave their mark. Cracks in the leather, loose book blocks, or acid-induced yellowing threaten the integrity of the work. In our Linz workshop, we dedicate ourselves to the task of not merely masking these damages, but fixing them professionally.

Our approach to the repair of old books follows the principle of minimal invasive intervention. We only intervene where it is absolutely necessary for the stability of the book, ensuring that the original character of the volume is maintained. In doing so, we rely on proven techniques of classical bookbinding and use exclusively chemically neutral and reversible materials. This ensures that our work does not damage the object in the long term, but instead significantly extends its lifespan.

The Restoration Process in 4 Steps

01

Condition Analysis

Every book begins with a detailed examination. We analyze the cover material, the state of the paper, and the type of original binding to determine the appropriate restoration strategy.

02

Cleaning and Stabilization

Careful removal of dust and surface contaminants. Loose pages are secured before the actual structural repair of the spine or the headbands begins.

03

Artisanal Repair

Application of Japanese tissue for tears, re-sewing of loose signatures, or reinforcement of the fold. For covers, we use precisely matched leather or linen additions.

04

Finishing and Protection

Final pressing of the volume to ensure stability and a final quality check. The book is securely packaged for handover, including specific care instructions.

Who is This Service For?

Our repair services are designed for a wide spectrum of owners of valuable printed works. This includes private individuals who possess cherished family bibles, genealogy books, or old diaries that have been passed down through generations and now require structural renewal. We also work for antique collectors who wish to ensure that their investments remain in optimal condition and are protected from further decay.

Furthermore, we support smaller archives and private libraries in Linz and the surrounding area in securing their holdings. When a book has suffered from frequent use over the years, we provide the necessary professional support to restore readability and physical stability without destroying the historical context of the object. Whether it is a single precious volume or a small collection, the level of care remains identical.

How the Work Proceeds in Our Workshop

After you entrust us with your book, we first create a written documentation of its current state. This is essential to allow for a before-and-after comparison and to precisely record all existing defects. We discuss with you whether a purely conservative repair (preserving the status quo) or a restorative overhaul (restoring original function) is desired.

The actual work is performed by hand. We avoid industrial glues that become hard and brittle over time, using instead traditional wheat starch paste or specialized archival adhesives. Every single page is treated with respect for its age. Should unexpected damages emerge during the process, we inform you immediately before taking further steps to ensure transparent processing.

What to Prepare for Your Order

To expedite the process, we ask that you provide a brief description of the damage in your initial inquiry. Ideally, include photos of the affected areas: the spine, the corners of the cover, and a shot of the binding in an open state. This allows us to make a rough initial estimate of the effort, although a binding calculation is only possible after a physical inspection on-site.

Please bring the book to us at Landstraße in stable packaging to avoid further transport damage. If the book is part of a series, it is often helpful to bring an intact copy from the same series as a reference for material selection (leather color, linen texture). This allows us to make the additions as discreet as possible.

The Result: What You Receive

At the end of the repair, we return your book in a condition that preserves both the aesthetic dignity of the work and guarantees the mechanical stability for future use. You receive a work whose pages are once again securely seated in the binding and whose cover is protected against further disintegration. The materials used blend harmoniously with the original appearance.

In addition to the physical repair, you receive documentation of the measures taken. We also provide specific recommendations for storage to maximize the lifespan of the repair. This includes guidance on correct humidity, light exposure, and the proper way to place the book on a shelf so that it does not come under tension again.

Timeframes and Delivery

The repair of old books is a slow process that requires patience. The average duration of an order is between 3 and 6 weeks, depending on the severity of the damage and the drying times of the materials used. We do not work under time pressure, as haste in restoration often leads to irreversible errors.

In exceptional cases, we can offer prioritization, whereby an urgency fee is charged according to our terms and conditions. However, we strongly recommend adhering to the regular schedule to ensure the highest artisanal quality. You will be regularly informed about the progress of your project.

Scope of Work: What is Included

  • Detailed material analysis and condition report before work begins.
  • Cleaning of the book block from loose dust and surface deposits.
  • Securing tears in the pages using Japanese tissue and archival glue.
  • Reinforcement or complete replacement of sewing threads for loose signatures.
  • Repair of damaged joints between the book cover and the spine.
  • Correction of deformed headbands and spine pieces.
  • Professional pressing of the volume in a book press.

What is NOT Included

We wish to be transparent about which tasks we do not perform. Bearcatdock is an artisanal bindery and not a state-accredited restoration workshop for national cultural assets. Therefore, we do not perform work on objects that are under state monument protection or require special official authorization for restoration.

Likewise, we do not perform chemical treatments for the removal of deep-seated ink stains or large-scale mold spores, as this requires a specialized laboratory environment to ensure the health of the staff and the safety of other books. We focus on mechanical and structural repair.

Pricing and VAT

Since every old book is unique, repairs are billed on an hourly basis. This is the fairest method, as the effort varies extremely between a simple reinforcement of the spine and a complex re-sewing of a disintegrated volume. The price consists of the actual working time and the specialized materials consumed.

All prices include the statutory VAT of 20%. For our business customers (B2B), we list the net amount separately. A detailed breakdown of hours and materials is provided with the final invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions about Book Repair

Can you save very disintegrated books with missing pages?

Yes, as long as the core of the book is still present. We cannot recreate missing pages, but we can stabilize and bind the existing pages so that the book is once again handleable and no further loss occurs.

What materials do you use for the repair?

We use exclusively high-quality, acid-free materials. These include goat leather for covers, linen, Japanese tissue for page reinforcement, and natural wheat starch pastes, which are the standard in archiving.

Is the repair reversible?

Yes, this is a core principle of modern conservation. We use glues and techniques that can be removed by another professional if necessary, without damaging the original paper.

What is the deposit for a repair?

According to our terms and conditions, we charge a deposit of 30% of the estimated order value to secure material procurement and the reservation of workshop time.
